Hong Kong Light Dues.

We have the honour to request your attention to the position which has arisen in regard to this matter.

On 8th June last the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce pointed out to the Government there that, since

the doubling of the light dues from 1st January 1931, coastal steamers trading regularly between Hong Kong and China Ports had to pay more in light dues per visit at

Hong Kong than they did at China Ports, also that the

practice of levying these dues for every call was

inequitable because vessels engaged in regular and

continuous trade with the port were receiving no consider-

ation over vessels making infrequent and irregular calls.

The Chamber, in emphasising the vital necessity of keeping charges on shipping as low as possible, submitted that

existing conditions warranted a reduction in the present

scale of light dues, advocated the introduction of a

system of compounded fees and requested the Government to give favourable consideration to both of these sub-

missions.
